HIA’s Guardians Program was able to bring Jeremiah James from Yakutat to Hoonah. Jeremiah harvested 3 harbor seals (shout out to Bob Hughes who took Jeremiah out hunting). March 19th was a beautiful spring morning for Hoonah City Schools 2nd-4th and 6th-7th graders and some high school students to watch Jeremiah skin and cut up the seals. HIA’s Cultural Program organized these cultural learning opportunities.
Jerimiah also taught a skin sewing class.
Jeremiah also taught a sea otter skin sewing class March 19-23, 2025. We appreciate the City of Hoonah Parks and Rec for giving us a rental discount for the Youth Center. HIA invited a total of 25 elders, 10 were not able to participate, 4 declined. We ended up with 11 elders in the class, as well as a few young people, Mary Jack took photos to document the class and was a participant. Xach Goins was a participant, he and Mary assisted in the set up and take down of all the class tables, chairs, plywood, and other class materials. Faith Grant and Terri Mills assisted where needed and they were participants.
